Winn Dixie Grocery Stores Not Requiring Masks as COVID-19 Cases Skyrocket
Southeastern Grocers, the parent company of Winn Dixie grocery stores, says it will not require customers to wear masks even though COVID-19 infections and deaths are soaring.
Joe Caldwell, director of corporate communications at Southeastern Grocers, told WTVT that (life-saving) safety masks would not be required because the grocery chain does not want to “cause undue friction between our customers and associates by regulating mask mandates.”
Caldwell explained to USA TODAY how Winn Dixie was passing the buck to state officials: “We strongly encourage state officials to lead the way in regulating these type of safety mandates.”
Employees, who will be at the mercy of infected customers, will be allowed to wear face masks, according to the Southeastern Grocers website.
