A white police officer took down a black Amazon driver for parking the wrong way on a street in Warren, Michigan on June 8.
A Facebook Live video starts with the Amazon delivery man on the ground with the cop on top of him. The driver shouts: “I delivered to her!”
The elderly customer, Diana Gouim, confirmed this to WJBK:
I can attest to it, he put the box in my hand.
Neighbor Geri Cheatham also confirmed the black driver was not doing anything wrong:
And he was so polite to my neighbor, he offered to put it on the chair for her because it was heavy. It was ridiculous for one little kid that was the size of me. He was scared. He was scared. I don’t blame him. It could have gotten out of control totally.
Witness Jim Michaels said the cops arrested the black driver because of the way he parked:
From when my sister walked in the house and then walked back out, the cop had him on the ground and cuffed and was calling for back-up. We, several of the neighbors, spoke with the officer saying the kid hasn’t done anything and the cop was like well, ‘He was parked the “wrong way.”
Police Commissioner Bill Dwyer said on June 10 that he was recommending the black driver be charged with feloniesof resisting arrest, failure to obey a lawful command, and failure to provide a driver’s license.
Deborah Bass, an Amazon spokesperson, said the company would defend their driver:
We see what others see in this video, and it’s unacceptable. We expect a swift investigation and full accountability for those involved. Amazon will deploy all necessary resources to investigate the matter with our Delivery Service Provider, as well as to represent and support the driver.
Mayor Jim Fouts called for one of the officers to be fired and be criminally investigated, but changed his mind after talking to Dwyer.
