A white police officer demanded that a Black business owner, Yema Khalif, prove that he owned his business in Tiburon, California:
This street closes at 9 o’clock at night and there’s never anybody in here. This isn’t regular business hours, there’s no customers in there. Is it your store that’s all we want to know? I want to know what you’re doing in the store at 1 o’clock in the morning…
Then show me that it’s your store… You should be grateful that we’re being as diligent as we are to look out for the street, that’s all we do.
The officer even demanded Khalif put his key in the door to prove he owned the store when a neighbor shouted at police identifying him.
Khalif was lawfully working inside his store with two other Black people, one of whom filmed the incident.
Khalif told KGO-TV how they were working late when the evening when he was questioned by the cop:
He demands to know what we are doing at the store at 1 o’clock in the morning and he wants me to prove who I am. This particular day we had just received a huge inventory and we just wanted to come out and put the inventory out before Saturday morning.
A Tiburon police spokesperson emailed a statement to KGO-TV:
The Town is engaging the services of an outside, independent attorney to conduct an investigation of the incident involving a local business owner and Tiburon Police Officers on August 21 at 10 Main Street. At the conclusion of the investigation the report will be provided to the Town Manager for review and appropriate action will be taken based on the findings of the investigator.
