A group of white parents are upset by a proposed plan would require 25 percent of a public school — PS 199 — on the wealthy upper west side of New York City to hold 25 percent of their seats for minority children with lower test scores in English and Math.
The parents shared their outrage during a school meeting on April 24, notes Spectrum News NY 1.
One woman berated school officials over the plan:
You’re talking about an 11-year-old, you worked your butt off, and you didn’t get that, what you needed or wanted. You’re telling them that you’re not going to go to a school that’s going to educate them the same way you’ve been educated. Life sucks!
Kristen Burger, an elected member of the Upper West Side Parent Council, said the plan would fix the the area’s “very segregated” middle schools.
Middle school principal Henry Zymeck told the parents that some of their comments were hurtful.
