Republican Virginia Congressional Candidate Cynthia Dunbar claimed that God did not intend for the government to care for poor people because the government is “ungodly.”
Dunbar, who has been campaigning with the father of Republican Sen. ted Cruz of Texas, made her Biblically false claims during a Facebook interview with right-wing preacher Lance Wallnau, notes Right Wing Watch:
It is the role of the church, the body of Christ, to be true religion undefiled, to care for the widows and the orphans. And when you turn that over to the government it becomes problematic.
They are not benevolent. Sometimes the social justice issues get confused out of a true heart of caring for the poor.
We have to realize that when we hand that [task] over to an ungodly government, without a heart, without a soul, that is not how God intended it to be done.
There is not one verse in the Bible that says the government cannot help the poor, and churches are not prevented from helping the poor (along with government) under U.S. law.
Dunbar is repeating a popular Republican conservative Christian talking point that is used to justify cutting government aid for the poor.
