US Police Kill Nearly 1,000 People In 2018, Will Top Developed Nations Again

U.S. police shot and killed 987 Americans in 2018. A database maintained by the Washington Post found that U.S. police killed 987 Americans in 2017 as well.

According to numbers by Vox, U.S. police will far outpace police in other developed countries, again.

CNN reports that 47 police officers were shot and killed in the line of duty in 2018, but failed to mention that some of them were killed by other officers.

For example, the Los Angeles Times noted on Dec. 7 that Ventura County Sheriff’s Sgt. Ron Helu was killed during the Thousands Oaks, California mass shooting by another officer’s bullet:

The fatal bullet that struck Ventura County Sheriff’s Sgt. Ron Helus during a chaotic shooting scene inside Borderline Bar and Grill in November was fired from a California Highway Patrol officer’s rifle.

The FBI reports that 53 “law enforcement officers have been reported feloniously killed in 2018,” while 51 “law enforcement officers have been reported accidentally killed in 2018.”
