Trump Treats Lawyer Michael Cohen ‘Like Garbage,’ Threatens To Fire Him Often: Report
President Donald Trump has threatened to fire his longtime lawyer Michael Cohen multiple times and treats him poorly, according to a new report.
Half a dozen people told The New York Times that Cohen has been denigrated for years by Trump with gratuitous insults, dismissive statements and threats of firing.
Roger Stone, a GOP operative and longtime friend of Trump, told the newspaper:
Donald goes out of his way to treat him like garbage.
Stone recalled when Trump said of Cohen: “He owns some of the finest Trump real estate in the country — paid top dollar for it, too.”
The New York Times notes that Trump’s lawyers and advisers have come to the realization that Cohen could be charged criminally and may end up cooperating with federal officials who are investigating him for activity that may include work he did for Trump.
Sam Nunberg, a former aide to Trump who worked with Cohen and Stone, added:
The softer side of the president genuinely has an affection for Michael. However, the president has also taken Michael for granted. Whenever anyone complains to me about Trump screwing them over, my reflective response is that person has nothing to complain about compared to Michael.
Despite the reported abuse, Cohen told Fox News in 2017: “I will do anything to protect Mr. Trump.’’
Cohen told Vanity Fair in 2017: “I’m the guy who would take a bullet for the president. I’d never walk away.”
