Trump Spokesman Hogan Gidley Smears Sen. Jeff Merkley For Trying To See Immigrant Children Held In ICE Child Detention Center
The Trump White House attacked Democratic Sen. Jeff Merkley of Oregon for trying to check on the welfare of immigrant children being held in an ICE Child Detention Center in Brownsville, Texas, on June 3.
ICE employees called the police on Merkley who simply made his request while standing outside the center, which used to be a Walmart with its windows and glass doors blacked out.
Merkely criticized the Trump administration’s policy in a video of the incident:
You’re seeking asylum, and the first thing that happens when you get here is you’re torn away from your parents. What kind of impact does that have on these children?
Merkely also tweeted on June 3:
I was barred entry. Asked repeatedly to speak to a supervisor—he finally came out and said he can’t tell us anything. Police were called on us.
Children should never be ripped from their families & held in secretive detention centers. RT if you agree this is WRONG. pic.twitter.com/GVCuXNjR8d

White House deputy press secretary Hogan Gidley (pictured above) falsely claimed on June 4 that Merkley was “irresponsibly spreading blatant lies” and “smearing hardworking, dedicated law enforcement officials,” reports POLITICO.
After lying about Merkely “smearing” ICE workers, Gidley falsely claimed that Merkely was endangering children:
No one is taking a public safety lecture from Sen. Merkley, whose own policies endanger children, empower human smugglers and drug cartels, and allow violent criminal aliens to flood into American communities.
