Trump Sending Hundreds of Unmarked Federal Police to Chicago, After They Attacked People in Portland: Operation Legend

President Donald Trump announced that he is going to send hundreds of unmarked federal police to Chicago after they tear-gassed and beat people in Portland, Oregon:

The Department of Justice will immediately surge federal law enforcement to the city of Chicago. The FBI, ATF, DEA, U.S. Marshals Service, and Homeland Security will together be sending hundreds of skilled law enforcement officers to Chicago, to help drive down violent crime. Murderers and violent criminals are breaking a wide range of federal laws, we have that, it’s as wide as it can be.

The New Civil Rights Movement notes that “federal officers cannot arrest Americans on non-federal charges unless state or local law enforcement deputizes them first, which is not expected to happen.”

The Boston Herald notes that the federal police assaults are called “Operation Legend” is named after a 4-year-old boy, LeGend Taliferro, who was killed while sleeping in his home in Kansas City, Missouri, on June 29.
