President Donald Trump claimed that “dirty cops” in the FBI charged his former national security adviser Michael Flynn for lying to the FBI in January 2017 about his conversations with a Russian diplomat.
Flynn pleaded guilty to the charge twice, but now wants to withdraw his plea because documents have surfaced showing an internal FBI debate on how to handle the case, reports the New York Times.
Trump was asked by CNN’s Jim Acosta if he regretted firing Flynn for because he “lied to the Vice President and the FBI.”
Trump dodged the question, and went on a rant against the FBI and defended Flynn:
Right at the beginning of the administration, the dirty cops came in. And, you see the notes, Jim — whether you’re on our side, that side, whatever, I mean, I assume — let’s all talk about fairness — what they did do General Flynn, and by the way, to Roger Stone and to others, was a disaster and a disgrace, and it should never be allowed to happen in this country again.
