Trump Rolls Back Fines On Abusive Nursing Homes That Harm Seniors
President Donald Trump’s administration is rolling back the use of fines against nursing homes that injure seniors or put them in serious risk for injuries.
Nursing homes were fined for wrongdoings by Medicare, which provides federal taxpayer money for nursing homes, under the Obama administration, notes The New York Times.
The American Health Care Association, a lobbying group for nursing homes, has long complained about federal inspectors focusing on wrongdoings.
The American Health Care Association’s president, Mark Parkinson, asked Trump for relief from the fines (to protect the elderly) back in December 2016: “It is critical that we have relief.”
The New York Times reports that almost 6,500 nursing homes, which is four of every 10, have been cited at least once for a serious violations — failing to protect residents from avoidable accidents, neglect, mistreatment and bedsores — since 2013.
