Trump Removes Glenn Fine, Independent Watchdog for $2 Trillion Coronavirus Aid
President Donald Trump removed acting Pentagon watchdog Glenn Fine, who was overseeing the government’s $2 trillion in coronavirus aid.
Trump replaced Fine with EPA inspector general to serve as the temporary Pentagon watchdog in addition to his other responsibilities, reports POLITICO.
On April 3, Trump fired the intelligence community’s inspector general, Michael Atkinson, whose handling of a whistleblower report led to Trump’s impeachment in 2019.
Michael Horowitz, the inspector general of the Justice Department who also oversees a council of inspectors general, responded to Trump’s firing of Atkinson:
The Inspector General Community will continue to conduct aggressive, independent oversight of the agencies that we oversee.
Trump has been attacking Health and Human Services Inspector General Christi Grimm because she released a report on April 6 that documented widespread testing delays and supply issues in over 200 hospitals.
Why didn’t the I.G., who spent 8 years with the Obama Administration (Did she Report on the failed H1N1 Swine Flu debacle where 17,000 people died?), want to talk to the Admirals, Generals, V.P. & others in charge, before doing her report. Another Fake Dossier!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) April 7, 2020
House Oversight Chairwoman Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) accused Trump of engaging “in an assault against independent Inspectors General since last Friday in order to undermine oversight of his chaotic and deficient response to the coronavirus crisis.”
