President Donald Trump falsely claimed that his 2016 Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton lied to the FBI, and suggested that she be prosecuted.
Trump made his false accusation while expressing sympathy for his former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn who pleaded guilty on Dec. 1 to lying to the FBI:
I feel badly for General Flynn. I feel very badly. He’s led a very strong life and I feel very badly, John. I will say this, Hillary Clinton lied many times to the FBI and nothing happened to her. General Flynn lied and they destroyed his life.
Hillary Clinton, on the Fourth of July weekend, went to the FBI, not under oath, it was the most incredible thing anyone has ever seen. She lied many times. Nothing happened to her. Flynn lied and it’s like, they ruined his life. It’s very unfair.
Former FBI director James Comey testified to the House Oversight Committee in July: “We have no basis to conclude [Clinton] lied to the FBI,” noted POLITICO.
Comey also said Clinton did not break the law by using a private email server.
