Trump Falsely Claims He Can Override Governors to Reopen Churches, COVID-19 Deaths Surge as States Reopen

President Donald Trump falsely claimed that he can force governors to reopen churches in their states while COVID-19 deaths surge and cases of churchgoers dying from the coronavirus increase (MORE VIDEO BELOW):

The governors need to do the right thing and allow these very important essential places of faith to open right now. For this weekend. If they don’t do it, I will override the governors.

However, Axios notes the “federal government does not have the power to implement nationwide measures to move toward a reopening.”

Trump parroted his science-denying evangelical base by calling on governors to allow churches to reopen because women’s health clinics are open:

Some governors have deemed liquor stores and abortion clinics essential, but have left out churches … it’s not right. So I am correcting this injustice and am calling houses of worship essential. I call upon governors to allow churches and places of worship to open right now.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that coronavirus deaths have surged in Texas, while the Daily Beast notes the same for Mississippi and WKU Public Radio reports surge-related deaths in Kentucky.
