Trump Demands Reports On Waste And Fraud in Afghanistan Be Censored
President Donald Trump demanded that the Defense Department censor independent reports that document waste and fraud in the reconstruction efforts in Afghanistan.
During a televised meeting with his Cabinet, Trump complained about this information being lawfully released by the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR):
The enemy reads those reports; they study every line of it…. I don’t want it to happen anymore, Mr. Secretary. You understand that. I don’t want it to happen anymore, Mr. Secretary.
SIGAR has probed more than $130 billion spent in Afghanistan over the past 22 years, notes Mother Jones:
By its own estimation, the office has recovered more than $951 million from fines and settlements. Its most recent report, released in October, contained the startling conclusion that Afghan government forces now control the least amount of territory of any point in the past three years.
