President Donald Trump was asked by a reporter if Russia is still targeting the U.S., and responded, “Thank you very much, no” (full video below).
Trump also falsely claimed that he has been tougher on Russia than any president: “I think President Putin knows that better than anybody, certainly a lot better than the media.”
The Washington Post notes that Trump’s Director of National Intelligence Daniel Coats said last week that Russia and other countries are continuing to threaten the U.S. and “the warning lights are blinking red”:
These actions are persistent. They’re pervasive, and they are meant to undermine America’s democracy on a daily basis, regardless of whether it is election time or not,
White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders denied Trump’s statement, and insisted that he was saying “no” to questions.
However, Fox News host Shep Smith noted Sanders was wrong:
He was asked specifically if Russia is still targeting the US and he said no. The truth is recorded. Why he says one thing & his WH tries to change it, we really don’t know … Part of a pattern, say one thing, change it later, sorta.
