Trump Cancels Republican Convention in Florida, But Wants Kids Back in Florida Schools as COVID-19 Sets Records

CNN reports that President Donald Trump canceled the portion of the Republican National Convention to be held in Jacksonville, Florida, because COVID-19 cases have been surging and many Republicans refused to go

Trump told reporters in a White House briefing room about his sudden change in plans: “We won’t do a big, crowded convention, per se — it’s not the right time for that,” notes the New York Times.

The Los Angeles Times reports there is a COVID-19 death in Florida every eight minutes, while WFOR notes the Sunshine State set a new record on July 24.

Trump threatened on July 8 to cut the funding of schools if they did not reopen.

CNN reporter Daniel Dale tweeted on July 23 that Trump may allow some delayed openings, but may give public school money to private religious schools.
