George Papadopoulos, a foreign policy adviser to the Trump campaign, reportedly bragged in May 2016 that Russia had thousands of stolen emails that belonged to the Clinton campaign.
According to The New York Times, Papadopoulos bragged about the foreign criminal theft to an Australian diplomat, Alexander Downer, in a London bar.
When the Clinton emails began appearing on WikiLeaks in July 2016, Australian officials passed the information about Papadopoulos to the Obama administration which did not make the information public, according to four current and former American and foreign officials.
In July 2016, the FBI began investigating Russia’s attempts to disrupt the presidential election and if any of Trump’s associates conspired with the Russians.
Papadopoulos who pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI in October, is currently a cooperating witness in Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation of the Russia-Trump campaign collusion.
Former assistant secretary at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Juliette Kayyem told CNN that The New York Times article about Papadopoulos shows that the Trump team was aware of Russian attacks on the DNC and Hillary Clinton but did not report it to the FBI.
Former CIA agent Ned Price told MSNBC (video below) his analysis of the report in The New York Times:
Let me remind you for much of 2016 the American people were under the distinct impression the FBI was investigating one of the two major party nominees.
We knew all along that an investigation grew out of the Benghazi probe into Hillary Clinton. Director Comey in July of 2016 then famously went out and detailed the case the FBI laid out ultimately exonerating her but doing political damage in the process.
But then just a few months latter, in October, sending a public letter — a letter that was made public, I should say — essentially saying the case had been reopened. And all of that time we knew that there was this ongoing investigation into the Clinton matter.
What we did not know until earlier this year, 2017, was that the FBI also had an investigation into the Trump campaign.
Price also elaborated Papadopoulos revelation:
I don’t know for certain that it came from the FBI. but the timing to me certainly is interesting. It did come about four days after the president’s alleged that the [Steele] dossier — falsely alleged, I should say — that the dossier spawned this investigation when we now know otherwise. This, to me, certainly looks like it could be the FBI trying to correct the record here.
