Trump Admin Grants Christian Foster Care Agency Permission To Discriminate Against Jews And Others
The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has reportedly issued a waiver to Miracle Hill Ministries, a Christian foster care agency in South Carolina.
The waiver is a license to discriminate against anyone who does hot share Miracle Hill Ministries’ protestant Christian beliefs.
Miracle Hill Ministries previously turned away Jewish (Beth Lesser and her husband) and same-sex couples who wanted to adopt, notes ThinkProgress:
In 2017, [Lesser] filed a complaint with the state Department of Social Services (DSS), which responded by downgrading Miracle Hill’s license to provide foster care services.
Republican Gov. Henry McMaster of South Carolina responded with an executive order requesting that the HHS allow DSS to deviate from its non-discrimination policy, and allow Miracle Hill Ministries to discriminate, noted the Post and Courier.
McMaster cited the 1993 Religious Freedom Restoration Act, which has been used by white evangelical Christian organizations and businesses to discriminate against Americans, per sincerely held religious beliefs.
