Texas Bar Owner Bans Customers Wearing COVID-19 Safety Masks to ‘Push Back Against the Snitches and Contact Tracers’

The Liberty Tree Tavern in Elgin, Texas, has an outdoor sign that bans people who wear COVID-19 safety masks from entering:

Due to our concern for our citizens, if they feel the need to wear a mask, then they should probably stay home until it’s safe.

Kevin Smith, co-owner of the bar, explained his warped logic to KXAN:

It is more of a push back — the snitches, and the contact tracers out there. This is still a rural county.

Smith is possibly concerned that someone will notify the authorities if his bar violates life-saving coronavirus safety guidelines that limit in-person services (including bars) to 25% occupancy.

Texas reported its largest single-day increase in coronavirus cases on May 17, and the bar reopened on May 18.
