South Carolina Education Superintendent Molly Spearman released a Facebook video on Feb. 21 in which she claimed that school shootings could be stopped with mentoring by Christians.
Spearman advocated the religious proselytizing while speaking about the mass shooting in Parkland, Florida, notes the Friendly Atheist:
We have also seen the life-changing impact that mentorship programs can bring into troubled students’ lives, and [we] continue to encourage members of our faith community to partner with schools. By sharing Christ’s love, you could be a positive influence that prevents a tragedy like this from occurring.
The Associated Press reports that an evangelical organization was mentoring students at an elementary school in Beaufort County, South Carolina.
School officials said the program taught students non-academic behaviors and attitudes from a Christian mentor.
That program was suspended because of legal objections by the Freedom From Religion Foundation that said the school district “cannot allow its schools to be used as religious recruiting grounds.”
School district officials are trying to bring the Christian program back into public schools.
