Sorting Machines Are Being Removed From Post Offices, Mail Piling Up, Could Affect 2020 Election Results
Iowa Postal Workers Union President Kimberly Karol told NPR on Aug. 11 that sorting machines are being removed from post offices all over the state state, which is causing mail to pile up.
Karol said the operational changes are being ordered by Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, a major donor to President Donald Trump:
I don’t see this as cost-saving measures. I see this as a way to undermine the public confidence in the mail service. It’s not saving costs. We’re spending more time trying to implement these policy changes. And it’s, in our offices, costing more over time.
The Washington Post reported that key battleground states like Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania are already experiencing significant mail delays due to DeJoy’s changes, which could imperil the post office’s ability to deliver mail-in ballots on time for November elections.election.
