‘Simpsons’ Creator Won’t Apologize for ‘Apu’ Character: ‘People Love To Pretend They’re Offended’
“Simpsons” creator Matt Groening refused to apologize for the Indian character, Apu Nahasapeemapetilon, and laid blame on people who love to pretend to be offended (video below).
Groening was asked by USA TODAY about the criticism that Apu is a stereotype, and stated:
Not really. I’m proud of what we do on the show. And I think it’s a time in our culture where people love to pretend they’re offended.
In July 2017, comedian Hari Kondabolu made a documentary on TruTV about the character, “The Problem With Apu,” in which Kondabolu and other celebrities said that Apu is offensive to the Indian-American community.
