UPDATE: After getting caught and being publicly mocked, Cruz told KTRK that he made a mistake.
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) fled to Cancun, Mexico on Feb. 17 while Texas went into a deep freeze and lost all power, reports the New York Daily News.
However, after pictures of his trip (see below) went viral on social media, outrage followed, and Cruz decided to return to Texas on Feb. 18.
Journalist David Shuster tweeted a picture of Cruz flying to Mexico.
Just confirmed @SenTedCruz and his family flew to Cancun tonight for a few days at a resort they’ve visited before. Cruz seems to believe there isn’t much for him to do in Texas for the millions of fellow Texans who remain without electricity/water and are literally freezing. pic.twitter.com/6nPiVWtdxe

Fellow Republican Meghan McCain attacked Cruz on “The View” on Feb. 18:
It’s horrible. It looks like the apocalypse. I read something yesterday that said that hospitals are out of power and that the people in hospitals were trying to find generators to sit around with blankets. I mean, the last time I was in the hospital was obviously when I was giving birth.
I can’t imagine if the power went out. There’s a lot of heads to roll a lot of people to blame. I know what’s not helping right now is the fact that Sen. Ted Cruz is seen on a flight with his family to Cancun right now. But to like, literally flee your home state while people are freezing to death to go to Cancún is, uh, very Marie Antoinette.
