Sen. Lisa Murkowski Flip Flops, Now Opposes Obamacare
After voting twice against repealing Obamacare, Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska now says she supports repealing the landmark health care law’s individual mandate, which would likely drive up premiums and leave many Alaskans without health care.
Murkowski wrote in an op-ed for the Daily News-Miner:
I have always supported the freedom to choose. I believe that the federal government should not force anyone to buy something they do not wish to buy, in order to avoid being taxed.
Murkowski did not express opposition to forcing people to buy car insurance.
The nonpartisan American Academy of Actuaries recently warned Senate leaders that gutting the individual mandate will cause healthy Americans to drop their health care coverage, which means insurance premiums for sick Americans will skyrocket and the number of uninsured Americans will increase.
