Sen. Joni Ernst Is Heckled For Defending Assault Weapons, Blaming Mass Shootings On Mental Illness

Republican Sen. Joni Ernst of Iowa was booed and heckled at a town hall in Johnston, Iowa when she tried to blame mass shootings on mental illness, a right-wing talking point that has been debunked, noted USA TODAY (more video below).

Ernst told a teacher concerned about shootings in schools, that “a lot of the incidents we’ve seen do come back to mental illness,” and she was promptly heckled, reports The Independent.

Ernst also tried to claim that a handgun is just as dangerous as an assault weapon, which brought brought shouts of “Do something!” and “We need you to protect us!”
