Secretary of Defense Mark Esper told Fox News host Chris Wallace that the U.S. military could not have defeated Turkish forces who invaded Nothern Syria to attack the Kurds, who were abandoned by President Donald Trump last week.
Wallace reminded Esper of Trump’s decision to abandon the Kurds:
We were the protection for the Kurds. After [Trump] talked to [Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan] last Saturday, President Trump decided to pull those troops out and the Turks invaded. Isn’t that the definition of abandoning the Kurds?
Esper then claimed — without evidence — that Turkey was going to Kurds in Syria “regardless of what we did.”
Esper went on to raise the white flag of surrender to the Turkish forces:
There is no way we could have stopped 15,000 Turks.
