White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany denied that President Donald Trump played down the COVID-19 pandemic even though Trump was recorded by author Bob Woodward on March 19 saying: “I wanted to always play it down, I still like playing it down.”
CBS News journalist Paula Reid asked McEnany about Trump’s lie:
Did President Trump intentionally mislead the American people about the threat of COVID?
McEnany quickly lied to protect Trump’s lie:
Absolutely not. This president, at a time when you’re facing insurmountable challenges, it’s important to express confidence.
Reid brought up Trump’s ‘playing it down” statement, which proved Trump lied to the American public in March:
Is “playing it down,” is that expressing calm? It seems dishonest.
McEnany claimed that Trump was trying to avoid “chaos” by not telling the truth about the deadly virus, which has now killed over 189,000 Americans:
And he makes clear that he doesn’t want to see chaos, by the way. Which is the second part of the quote, which you failed to read...
The president has never lied to the American public on COVID. The president was expressing calm and his actions reflect that.
