Poll: Over 40 Percent Of Americans Refuse Flu Vaccinations, Cling To Myths Instead

A new poll by the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago has found that over 40 percent of Americans have refused to get a flu shot for reasons that are unscientific myths.

The main reasons American refused to get flu shots were side effects worse than the flu itself (not true), believing they’ll get the flu from the shot (also not true) or thinking flu shots don’t work (also not true), notes WNYW.

The vaccine doesn’t work 100 percent of the time, but has never claimed to. The flu vaccine is engineered to prevent the most prevalent strains in each respective year.

More than 900,000 Americans were hospitalized because of the flu and more than 80,000 people died in 2017.
