Poll: 43% Of Republicans Want Trump To Have Power To Shut Down Journalists

A new poll by Ipsos finds that 43 percent of Republicans want President Donald Trump to have the legal power to shut down the press, which would violate the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

The poll also found that 26 percent of Americans believe “the president should have the authority to close news outlets engaged in bad behavior,” an action that would resemble a dictatorship such as Cuba or North Korea.

However, only 13 percent of Americans agree that “President Trump should close down mainstream news outlets, like CNN, the Washington Post and the New York Times.”

A whopping 85 percent of Americans agree that the “Freedom of the press is essential for American democracy.”

Sixty-eight percent believe that “reporters should be protected from pressure from government or big business interests.”

Back at the GOP, 48 percent of Republicans agree with Trump’s statement that “the news media is the enemy of the American people.”

Seventy-nine percent of Republicans believe that “the mainstream media treats President Trump unfairly.”
