Latana Chai says her pit bull dog, Sasha, threw herself against a door, just before midnight on June 10, and refused to stop barking until Chai came outside her home in Stockton, California.
Chai told KRCA the she discovered her house and the neighbor’s house, which are part of a fourplex, were on fire:
As soon as I got to the door, she runs in (and) starts barking, and I’m like, “What the heck is wrong with you? Like, you don’t do this.” I looked up and there’s black smoke coming from my neighbor’s house. You can see the flames coming out.
Chai then ran back into her home, and found Sasha holding her 7-month-old baby Masailah by the diaper, trying to carry her off a bed:
I ran into the room and I see Sasha. She has my baby by the diaper just dragging her off the bed — trying to get her to safety.
I grab my baby. I grab Sasha. And, I grabbed my phone and I called 911.
Firefighters arrived, and put out the fire.
However, Chai said her home and a neighbor’s home were condemned because of the fire:
(Sasha) saved everybody. Because if it wasn’t for her, I don’t think that any of us in this complex would have known anything… If she wasn’t barking or really going at the door like that, I probably wouldn’t have known nothing.
Chai has set up a GoFundMe page to help the family find a new home.
