Philadelphia Police Fatally Shoot Black Man, Walter Wallace, Protests Follow

Police were filmed fatally shooting a black man named Walter Wallace Jr. who was allegedly holding a knife, in Philadelphia on Oct 26. The shooting has triggered protests and some looting, reports WCAU.

Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney addressed the shooting in a statement, reports NBC News:

I have watched the video of this tragic incident and it presents difficult questions that must be answered.

Wallace’s father, Walter Wallace Sr., told the Philadelphia Inquirer that his son had mental health issues and was taking medication:

Why didn’t they use a Taser? His mother was trying to defuse the situation.

Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw said that not all police officers carry Tasers:

Every police officer is not issued a Taser at this time. It’s common for officers to respond to a domestic disturbance, or any type of call, with a gun because that’s one of the tools that we carry on our toolbelt.
