House Speaker Paul Ryan blew off calls for a House ethics investigations into allegations that President Donald Trump sexually abused women, and referred the issue to the Trump White House.
During an interview on the TODAY show, host Savannah Guthrie pointed out that Ryan had called for House members to resign over sexual accusations:
President Trump has been accused as well. Three of those accusers recently asked for a congressional investigation. They want you, they want Congress to look into whether those accusations against the president are true.
Despite telling some members of the House to resign over sexual harassment allegations, Ryan told Guthrie: “Those are criminal matters and Congress doesn’t do criminal investigations.”
Guthrie: reminded Ryan that the House does ethics investigations, but Ryan referred Trump’s alleged sexual abuse victims to the Trump White House:
I would invite you to talk to the White House.
Ryan then lectured Guthrie not to turn accusations against the president into “some partisan thing.”
The White House position on the president’s accusers is that they are all liars. Is that your position?
Ryan retreated quickly to a position of ignorance of the issue:
Look, I don’t even know what all of these accusations are. I’m focused on fixing Congress.
