An off-duty police officer shoved a female teenage referee and yelled, “Get out of my way” during a youth basketball game in Augusta, Kansas, on Jan. 13.
Craig Carlson posted a video of the incident on Facebook with a description:
This happened today in Augusta Ks… this guy is a Wichita PD officer, who assaulted a 17yr old basketball official during a 5/6th grade game. This is exactly why there is a shortage of officials in sports. This is unacceptable and should be seen and shared.
The official that was pushed is my buddy’s daughter and being an official myself, I thought I should share this with all my friends
Wichita Police Officer Paul Cruz confirmed the man was an employee, but refused to confirm or deny that he is a cop, notes The Wichita Eagle:
WPD will be reviewing the incident to determine if any department policies were violated. WPD officials do not have all the facts surrounding the incident at this time and cannot provide any further comment.
A woman commented on the video and claimed the referee is her niece.
And sadly this kind of abuse on these teenage athletes who are reffing is becoming more frequent. Absolutely ridiculous.
An Augusta Police Department spokesman said the department is investigating the incident.
