Megachurch Pastor John MacArthur Said Church Members Had COVID-19 in April, Denied It In August

Pastor John MacArthur said on April 24 that a couple from his Los Angeles-based Grace Community Church came down with COVID-19 and “wound up in the hospital.”

MacArthur called the pandemic a “health crisis” and expressed concern about exposing other church members to the deadly virus, according to a video posted by Christian psychologist Warren Throckmorton.

However, on August 30, MacArthur claimed that “nobody in our congregation” had ever been hospitalized with COVID-19, and he defied orders from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.

MacArthur also said “there is no pandemic” on Aug. 30.

MacArthur received a standing ovation in his church on Sept. 13 for defying a court order and the Los Angeles Public Department of Health to stop holding indoor church services without social distancing or masks.

MacArthur told his congregation on Aug. 16 that God made it hot in Los Angeles so that people would come inside the Grace Community Church without masks.

While MacArthur has defied science, COVID-19 deaths and cases have continued to climb in California, reported the Los Angeles Times.
