Las Vegas Police Kill Man For Holding Plastic Toy Sword

Las Vegas police shot and killed Lloyd Napouk for holding a  homemade plastic sword toy on Oct. 27.

Napouk was killed by Metro Sgt. Buford Kenton and officer Cameran Gunn who were investigating calls of a man “walking door-to-door” with a tool known to be used in carjackings or a machete, reports the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Napouk calmly smoked a cigarette and held his toy as Kenton and Gunn escalated the non-life-threatening situation.

After Napouk ignored police commands to drop the toy, Kenton prepped for the future violence on the radio:

Let’s get a unit with a beanbag shotgun. And can we have K-9 out here and have medical stand by? Call for medical.

Napouk walked toward Kenton with the toy his hand, and Kenton became hysterical:

I’m going to shoot you! If you come one more step, you’re dead!

Metropolitan Police Department Assistant Sheriff Charles Hank said Napouk lived with his girlfriend about a mile away from where he was killed.

Hank added that Napouk would have faced a charge of resisting a public officer with a deadly weapon because of the toy.

Las Vegas police have shot 21 people this year, and killed 11.

The Guardian reported in 2015:

There have been 55 fatal police shootings – total – in England and Wales from 1990 to 2014… one fatal shooting by Icelandic police in the country’s 71-year history… German police had killed six people by gunshot in 2011 and seven in 2012.
