Journalist Destroys Trump’s Convoluted ‘Obamagate’ Conspiracy Theory
President Donald Trump spent an entire weekend attacking former President Barack Obama for allegedly masterminding a FBI conspiracy to hurt Trump’s 2016 campaign and force Trump’s former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn to commit perjury.
Flynn admitted to lying to the FBI about his conversations with then-Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak in late 2016, which were about President-elect Trump lifting the sanctions against Russia imposed by the Obama administration for Russia’s interference in the 2016 election, noted The Atlantic. Flynn lied to Vice President Mike Pence in early 2017 about the conversations, and Trump fired Flynn.
Vanity Fair reporter Gabriel Sherman destroyed Trump’s claims that Obama had somehow engineered an illegal FBI investigation into the Trump campaign, as Obama never made the investigation public, which would have hurt Trump.
Serious question for Trumpers: why would Obama “SPY” on Trump campaign but not do anything with the info? Put another way, why would Obama WH go to extreme lengths to break the law but not help Hillary win? That’s the dumbest conspiracy of all time.— Gabriel Sherman (@gabrielsherman) May 11, 2020
Political analyst Nate Silver noted that Trump’s effort to make the 2020 election about Obama is an enormous mistake given Obama’s popularity.
Turning the election into a referendum on Obama vs. Trump would seem to be one of the dumbest possible moves for Trump given Obama's popularity, which was pretty good when he left office and has improved since. https://t.co/o7rjeF6k4s— Nate Silver (@NateSilver538) May 11, 2020
Former FBI Director James Comey likely doomed Hillary Clinton’s campaign by announcing the reopening of the investigation into her private email server only 10 days before the 2016 election, reported Silver om his website FiveThirtyEight.
