Police in Marion, Indiana, were filmed beating and tasing a nude mentally ill man on April 30 (full video here).
An anonymous witness filmed police as they violently arrested Arrington Barber, who reportedly suffers from schizophrenia.
James Barber, Arrington’s father, voiced his outrage to WXIN:
They’re beating him down like he’s a dog. It’s disgusting, I mean it’s disgusting…
Those officers are going to have to answer some questions.
Michele Davis, Arrington’s mother, added:
You can’t just beat him and treat him any kind of way ’cause he’s not right in his mind.
I don’t know what he might have said that would cause anybody to strike him like that. I’m lost. I really am…
I mean he has his issues. I’m never going to say he doesn’t, but at the same token let’s work hand and hand and fix this.
Arrington’s parents say their 29-year-old son suffers from schizophrenia, and that he was wearing only a blanket at the time of the beating.
Bloody wounds appear on Arrington’s forehead in his mug shot.
On May 2, Marion Chief Angela Haley said Arrington had a warrant for public nudity.
According to Haley, when a cop tried to arrest Arrington, the nude man dropped his blanket and ran into his apartment building.
Haley said police chased Arrington into the apartment, but when they tried to tase the unarmed man, he fled past them.
The bizarre chase ended up back on a public street, which is where Arrington was punched and tased.
Haley said the mentally ill man did not comply with police commands and “was subdued in accordance with Marion Police Department’s Use of Force Policies and Indiana Law Enforcement Training.”
Arrington was charged with resisting law enforcement, public indecency and public nudity.
Arrington’s parents are calling for a thorough investigation of the violent arrest.
