Police officer Cody Skipper was filmed leading schoolchildren in prayer at a “See You at the Pole” Christian event in September at Elkhart Central High School in Indiana.
Skipper suggested that he knew his participation was illegal as he told the kids after the prayer: “I don’t care about laws.”
Geoffrey T. Blackwell, litigation counsel for American Atheists, sent a letter to the school district, notes the Friendly Atheist:
The law could not be more clear on this issue. Staff members are not permitted to lead or participate in religious activities with students. Parents entrust their children to public schools for their education, not for religious indoctrination.
