Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents took a man into custody as he was taking his wife to deliver their baby in San Bernardino, California, on Aug. 15.
Maria del Carmen Venegas told KCBS that she was in need of a Cesarean section when her husband, Joel Arrona, stopped for gas, and their car was approached by two SUVs of ICE agents.
Venegas was asked to show her ID, which she provided, but Arrona did not have his ID.
The ICE agents searched their car without a warrant, placed Arrona into custody and left Venegas alone at the gas station.
Venegas said she had to drive herself to the hospital to deliver her baby boy:
My husband needs to be here. He had to wait for his son for so long, and someone just took him away.
ICE defended taking Aronna into custody during the medical emergency, and leaving Venegas at the gas station:
Mr. Arrona-Lara, a citizen of Mexico illegally residing in the United States, was taken into custody Wednesday by ICE Fugitive Operations Team officers in San Bernardino, Calif. Mr. Arrona-Lara is currently in ICE custody pending removal proceedings with the Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR).
BuzzFeed News reports that ICE is trying to reopen “nearly 8,000 deportation cases that had been administratively closed — meaning pushed off the court’s docket.”
