ICE Arrests 170 Immigrants Offering To Sponsor Migrant Children Caged By Trump
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents arrested 170 immigrants who offered to sponsor migrant children who were caged by the Trump administration in detention facilities.
ICE said the arrests happened from early July to November, reports NBC News.
However, 109 of the immigrants had no criminal records. ICE did not say what type of crimes the other 61 had committed.
A new rule created by the Trump administration in June allows immigration authorities to check the criminal background and legal status of anyone who steps forward to sponsor the caged children, noted NBC News.
Democratic Sen. Kamala Harris of California was outraged, notes the San Francisco Chronicle:
It’s outrageous. I don’t know if this is intended or unintended, but a natural consequence of this is that these children will have nowhere to go.
