Houston Skyscrapers Have Lights on While 1 Million Residents Lose Power, Outrage Follows

Residents in Houston, Texas, are furious because downtown skyscrapers were burning brightly with power while 1.3 million people in the area were without electricity in the bitter cold on Feb. 15.

Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo told KTRK the lit skyline was “maddening,” and said she contacted CenterPoint Energy:

They tell me that tonight, they’ve figured out a way to actually pull those buildings offline.

Hidalgo said that CenterPoint Energy told her the power had to stay on Feb. 15 because critical infrastructure that runs through downtown needed to be protected.
