A healthy dog was put to death in Richmond, Virginia on March 22 because the dog’s owner, Anita Cullop-Thompson, wrote in her will that she wanted to be buried with the pooch.
The dog, Emma, was held at the Chesterfield Animal from March 8 until it was euthanized.
Chesterfield Animal Services manager Carrie Jones told WWBT about the heartbreaking moment:
We did suggest they could sign the dog over on numerous occasions, because it’s a dog we could easily find a home for and re-home. Ultimately, they came back in on March 22 and redeemed the dog.
Larry Spiaggi, president of the Virginia Funeral Director’s Association and owner of Morrissett Funeral home, added his disgust:
It’s not legal to put a dog’s cremated remains – or any animal – in a casket and bury them.
