Great Apes at San Diego Zoo Receive COVID Vaccine, Millions of Californians Still Waiting

Several orangutans and bonobos at the San Diego Zoo in California have been vaccinated for COVID-19 with an experimental vaccine developed specifically for animals by the veterinary pharmaceutical company Zoetis, reports CBS News.

Nadine Lamberski, chief conservation and wildlife health officer at the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, told National Geographic how historic this was:

This isn’t the norm. In my career, I haven’t had access to an experimental vaccine this early in the process and haven’t had such an overwhelming desire to want to use one.

KSWB reports that millions of Californians are still waiting to receive their vaccinations.
