Fox News Host Martha MacCallum pretended to speak for the family of Mollie Tibbetts, a 20-year-old Iowan who was allegedly killed by an undocumented immigrant.
Tibbetts’ family has publicly asked people not to use their daughter’s death as a political tool, noted CNN.
However, President Donald Trump, Republicans and Fox News have used Tibbetts’ death to bash immigrants.
MacCallum also ignored the Tibbetts’ pleas and pretended that she knew how they felt, notes Media Matters:
No one is saying that all 11 million people are capable of what this person is capable of, but put yourself in Mollie Tibbetts’ family’s shoes right now.
It’s bad enough to learn that someone who was living and working in your neighborhood murdered your beautiful daughter, it’s worse when you find out that they crossed the border illegally, that they’re not even supposed to be in the country.
There’s a process for coming into the country, there’s people waiting on line from many countries who are going through the proper process.
So the fact of the matter is that he shouldn’t have been here and that adds to their pain and it adds to how awful the situation is.
Tibbetts’s cousin Sandi Tibbetts Murphy slammed those who are using the murder to attack immigrants on Facebook on Aug. 24:
Especially for those of you who did not know her in life, you do not get to usurp Mollie and her legacy for your racist, false narrative now that she is no longer with us. We hereby reclaim our Mollie.
