Fox News Falsely Claims, Again, The Russia Investigation Began With Steele Dossier

“Fox & Friends” host Steve Doocy falsely claimed that the investigation into collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia began with ex-British spy Christopher Steele’s dossier on Trump.

Vox notes that Fox News hosts have repeatedly told this lie even though the “FBI’s counterintelligence investigation of the Trump campaign began in July 2016 — months before the FBI was even alerted to the existence of the Steele dossier.”

The New York Times reported that the incident that began the FBI investigation was when WikiLeaks published stolen emails from the Democratic National Committee (in n July 2016.

Additionally, Australia’s top diplomat in the U.K. told U.S. officials about a conversation he had two months earlier with George Papadopoulos, a foreign policy adviser to the Trump campaign, who bragged about knowing that Russia had “thousands of emails that would embarrass Mrs. Clinton, apparently stolen in an effort to try to damage her campaign.”
