Fox News And Republicans Push ‘Secret Society’ Conspiracy About FBI, Turns Out To Be Joke

A “secret society” conspiracy theory about the FBI pushed by Fox News and some Republicans has turned out to be a joke text.

ABC News reports the personal text was sent by FBI lawyer Lisa Page to her then-boyfriend FBI agent Peter Strzok the day after Trump won the 2016 presidential election:

Are you even going to give out your calendars? Seems kind of depressing. Maybe it should just be the first meeting of the secret society.

Strzok sent a personal text to Page: “Omg I am so depressed.”

Republican Rep. Trey Gowdy of South Carolina sounded the alarm about the “secret society” earlier this week on Fox News.

Republican Sen. Ron Johnson of Wisconsin, also claimed on Fox News that there was a “secret society” within the FBI that was holding “secret meetings.”

Now that the “secret society” has been exposed as bogus, Johnson is walking back that claim, reports ABC News:

Everything I take with a grain of salt. [But] I’ve heard from an individual that … there was a group of managers within the FBI that were holding meetings off site.

Media Matters’ Lis Power tweeted how there were 20 mentions of “secret society” just on “Fox & Friends” on Jan. 23 and 24:
