Focus On The Family Falsely Claims Hawaii Bill Pushes ‘Kids To Change Gender’
Focus on the Family’s political arm, Family Policy Alliance, falsely claims that Senate Bill 270 pushes “kids to change gender” (video below).
KITV notes that Senate Bill 270 bans conversion therapy (also known as ex-gay therapy) on minors. Conversion therapy is the widely discredited practice of supposedly changing gay people into heterosexuals.
The Hawaii State Senate voted 24-1 to pass Senate Bill 270, which now moves to the House of Representatives for a vote, notes KITV.
The Family Policy Alliance, which strongly supports ex-gay therapy, pretended that the law would somehow force children to change genders:
Senate Bill 270 is what is known as a “therapy ban.” It would ban professional counseling for children and teens who are struggling with their gender identity. But the ban would ONLY forbid counseling that is designed to help them identify with their birth sex.
In other words, counseling that encourages them to change their gender – even to go through irreversible sex-change operations – would be protected by the state. But counseling to help them accept their God-given birth sex would be outlawed…
The bill would also affect counseling for unwanted same-sex attraction. This type of counseling has helped thousands of young people deal with unwanted same-sex attraction, which often arises out of sexual abuse. But if SB 270 passes, these young people will only be allowed to get counseling that encourages homosexuality.
The bill makes no mention of “unwanted same-sex attraction,” which is quite often used as a Christian dogwhistle for parents who do not want their child to be gay.
Likewise, the bill does not ban “counseling to help them accept their God-given birth sex.”
The bill also makes no mention of allowing “counseling that encourages homosexuality.”
