CNN reports that Manatee County, Florida, Commissioner Vanessa Baugh admitted on Feb. 18 that she broke vaccination protocol when planning a vaccine drive initiated by Gov. Ron DeSantis.
Baugh said she “wanted to make sure certain people were on the list” for vaccination after emails revealed that she directed county officials to create a list to let her and others jump the line in two richest and whitest zip codes in the county.
Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried slammed DeSantis:
This is a public health crisis. There is absolutely no excuse for why the governor and the commissioner is using politics in order to give out these vaccines. And this is corruption at its worst. This is why people don’t trust the system. And just to give you another statistic, right now in the state of Florida, 3.7 percent of the Black population has been vaccinated while 9.7 percent of the white population has been vaccinated at this point. So as the governor is rolling out the red carpet for his donors and political allies, he’s pulling the rug out from the minorities from different minority communities and communities of color.
