Evangelist Franklin Graham Requires His Coronavirus Medical Volunteers to be Anti-LGBT and Pro-Eternal Hell
Evangelist Franklin Graham is requiring his medical volunteer group, Samaritan’s Purse, to affirm his anti-LGBT positions, believe that unrighteous people go to eternal hell and agree with his anti-abortion beliefs.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio praised Samaritan’s Purse for its charitable work, but did not mention the group is led by pro-Trump Graham, who uses disaster relief as an effort to convert people to his religious beliefs.
Graham recruits medical volunteers on social media, but requires them to sign a “statement of faith” that affirms they oppose same-sex marriage, support eternal hell and oppose abortion without exception for rape or incest.
Jane Meyer, New York City Hall spokesperson, said Samaritan’s Purse field hospital will operate as a Mount Sinai facility, and must follow the hospital’s policy against discrimination, notes the Gothamist:
Our record on human rights is clear; and we are confident that the joint effort by Mt. Sinai and Samaritan’s Purse will save New Yorkers’ lives while adhering to the values we hold dear by providing care to anyone who needs it, regardless of background.
Amy Martin, a Brooklyn resident and former nursing assistant, said that she was concerned about the requirements:
I don’t want to demonize people who are volunteering their time, but it is a concerning thing. On the one hand, this is absolutely an all hands on deck situation. On the other hand, as an LGBT New Yorker, I would be hesitant to make that my first choice of care. I’d much rather be seen anywhere else.
